Talking to your house and having it do what you asked used to be science fiction. Now with an iPhone, Google Account or Amazon Prime and a couple of pieces of technology you can be the master of your castle. The big questions is what do you want to do?
Alexa is the most well known and functional of the three consumer voice control systems. With the addition of an Amazon Echo and a Bluetooth speaker, you can have an internet connected Bluetooth Audio entertainment system. If you want control in your house, adding a hub or smart bridge will enable you to broaden the system to include lighting, shades, thermostat and entry access.
Siri is the assistant that Apple has been upgrading for the last several years and now with the addition of an Gen4 Apple TV you can control lighting, shades, environment and door locks with your voice. Apple has lagged behind Amazon in the amount of items that are in the ecosystem but Apple by far has the most rigorous security of any of the systems currently available.
Google Home is the most recent entry in this party. Having been introduced in November 2016, powered by the Google Assistant, this system uses the massive processing power of Google to find things on the internet and control items in your home. Google Home like it’s brethren needs some type of hub or smart bridge to communicate to the other items in your house.
If you have lots of Apple equipment and an AppleTV Gen4, you should look at using Siri as your voice command, Homekit systems are becoming more and more common and are the most secure. If you already have an Amazon Prime account, Alexa on the Echo is a great choice and with the proper hub/bridge gives a really robust upgrade path and is compatible to lots of other systems as your automation needs grow.
Searching for content on the internet, especially recipes and facts is where Google Assistant shines in particular. All of the systems are rapidly evolving and are experiencing updates and additions on a weekly basis.
