Crestron Prodigy is a strong choice for smaller systems looking for lighting, climate, and a/v control. Prodigy was initially designed by Crestron to complete directly with Control4. Over time they moved the line into more of a value-based line emphasizing pre-made packages.
Crestron vs Prodigy – What’s the difference?
Crestron makes very expensive and programming intensive systems. These systems consistently sold for six figures and made Crestron one of the biggest names in home automation. Around 2010 with sales slowing, Crestron moved many of their products into the newly created Prodigy line, making it a strong competitor against up and comer Control4.
Crestron Prodigy Strengths
We find Prodigy mostly going into homes that want control over a theater, and don’t want to pay for a Control4 installation.
The line is geared towards smaller systems and as long is it is not pushed to far it can be quite affordable and easy to setup.
Crestron Prodigy Weaknesses
The first is expandability. Prodigy was not meant to compete against Crestron, so Crestron capped Prodigy’s abilities.
The second is the difficulty in programming. While the initial setup is easy, making it do anything “custom” requires a much deeper dive into advanced programming.
Last, Prodigy will not interface with security systems.
