Microsoft added three new video apps to its Xbox 360 console today that include on-demand content from Comcast, HBO GO, and MLB.TV.
Microsoft announced the new Xbox TV last October, and the service debuted with offerings from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, and its own Zune store with plans to add more pay TV channel partners. Comcast’s Xfinity TV is the first time the cable TV giant has made its on-demand content available through a console, and HBO GO makes the network’s entire catalogue of shows available on the Xbox.
Many of the offerings require separate pay TV subscriptions or one-time payments.

 Microsoft Xbox 360 TV

Microsoft aims to transform television by partnering with entertainment leaders to offer live and on-demand TV, movies, games, sports, music and more on its Xbox console.

From the press release:

Xbox 360 brings all your entertainment, friends and family together in one place. Now, easily switch from playing your favorite game with a friend out of state or even across the world to watching your favorite TV show with your family members on the same couch, all through Xbox LIVE. Ready to mix things up? Effortlessly switch from games to music to live TV and more, simply by telling your Xbox what you want to experience.

It sounds like quite a venture and may be further evidence that the next generation of consoles are still a long way off. Xbox TV is set to come out this holiday season. Here’s to hoping my Xbox doesn’t red ring by then.

The new Xbox 360 system has been getting a lot of attention with its 4 gigabytes of memery and glossy finish, but what gamers are really getting excited about is the soon to be released Kinect.

The Kinect Console Bundle will sell for $300 starting November 4 (just in time for Christmas season). That includes a new Xbox 360, the Kinect sensor and the Kinect Adventures game.  If you already own an Xbox 360 then you only pay $150 for the Kinect sensor.

Kinect is a controller free gaming experience, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without needing to touch a game controller.  So the player uses gestures and spoken commands to control the game something that is a unique experience among game consoles.

Kinect is based on software technology developed internally by Microsoft and range camera technology by Israeli developer PrimeSense, which interprets 3D scene information from a continuously-projected infrared pattern.  The technology recognizes gestures, faces, and voices, and it has the ability to track up to 6 people at a time.

We are looking forward to seeing the Kinect in action! And we’re looking forward to all the new and inventive games that will accompany it!

 Xbox

Good news Xbox 360 fans, Microsoft has finally released the new version of the popular game console. The new Xbox 360 features a glossy new design, a massive 250GB hard drive and built in Wi-Fi for easier connection to Xbox LIVE.  Xbox is also introducing Kinect, where you become the controller. Basically Xbox’s answer to the Wii Fit. The Kinect will be available this holiday season and with integrate seamlessly will your Xbox console.

With all these advancements what are Xbox fans really excited about? Ending the worst-case scenario ‘ring of death’ that plagues many game consoles. The ‘ring of death’ refers to the machine constantly overheating itself resulting in system failure. The user knows this has happed because of the tell-tale red light that appears on the front of the console.

But the new model promises to have resolved these issues with a new chip that uses less power and a larger, quieter fan to cool the machine. Xbox fans hope Microsoft has solved the problems that troubled earlier systems.

We here at Mile High Automation are Xbox fans and look forward to getting our hands on the new Xbox 360.

I have personally been using the Xbox 360 and Netflix system in my house for the past month. Here’s an overview of the system and how it integrates with our Audio Authority Avatrix HDTV distribution systems.

Xbox 360/Netflix Combo:
The new Xbox 360 dashboard added support for Netflix. If you have a Netflix account, you can go to your computer and put movies into your “instant queue”. You then go to your Xbox 360 and load the Netflix program.
Netflix then shows you all of the movies in your que along with HD cover art and movie descriptions. Overall it is a very nice looking interface.
The main limitations I found is that you currently cannot add movies from your TV, and you can’t sort your movie list in anyway.
Costs & Selection:
I signed up for the basic Netflix account for about $11/mo. With this account I can put as many movies as like into my queue.
The library Netflix has for its queue is decent. It has some new titles, and many favorites from the past 30 years. However, you will not see the latest Hollywood blockbuster when they first come out on DVD.
HDTV Distribution via the Avatrix:
Many of our clients are enjoying their Avatrix HDTV distribution system. It allows you to put up to 6 source devices in a central location and access them on any TV in your home.
When used as a source, the Xbox 360 is able to send this movie collection to any TV in your home. It makes for a very inexpensive movie distribution system. $11/mo & $250 for an Xbox is a much easier price point then $30,000 for a Kalidescape system.
