Customize your HAI Touch Screen Interface

We have been using the HAI Omnitouch 10p for almost a year now. It is a great device that allows clients to easily control their home automation systems. Prior to the 10p and 5.7e touch screens, we used the OmniTouch 5.7 and before that the OmniTouch 3.9. These were great screens, but did not allow for any customization. The standard HAI interface is very nice and extremely functional. However, it’s not ideal for all homes. The now 10p and 5.7e, along with HAI’s automation studio give us the tools to unlock the screens and create some amazing touch screen designs…

The software tool, called HAI Automation Studio, can be used to customize the interface of Omnitouch 10p and Omnitouch 5.7e touchscreen devices. Using this tool, you can create the new interface for the touchscreen and then upload the new interface to the device. You can now choose your colors, themes, buttons, and options. Going further, we can map your floor plans onto your touch screen. The map would act as a menu to control the rooms in your house. These customizations make the system more personal and user friendly.

So, how would you like your touchscreen interface to look?

  1. IP Address or Domain Name: This is your DDNS domain name (ex: myhome.homeip.net).
  2. Port Number: Always 4369
  3. Encryption Keys 1 & 2: If you purchased the system from us this will automatically be filled in. If not, go to your touch screen and hit System, Setup, System Setup, Enter Code, 6 (Misc), and scroll down to the encryption keys.
  4. User Code: The 4-digit code you use to arm/disarm the system.
  5. Click Save.

Step 3:  Hit the connect/disconnect button on the top right and you will connect to your system. Enjoy!

What the iPad means for Home Automation

Despite all the bad press the iPad has received I think it has some great uses, especially in the home automation and control segment.

What it is: Currently the iPad will support the H@me app and HAI’s WL3. Both of these applications are great at giving you control of your home on your iPhone. From the tablet you can control lights, temperatures, music, and security.

What is is not: The iPad is not a replacement for a true home automation touch screen. A dedicated touch screen gives you control over your system, as well as allows you to access setup menus, change settings, and have a greater level of control of your system.

The iPad and iPhone/iTouch systems are great, but they aren’t going to replace the OmniTouch touch screens any time soon.

That said, my order for a iPad is already in with Apple…

Touch Screen Options: OmniTouch 5.7e & OmniTouch 10p

Compared to other devices, touch screen based devices are easier to learn and operate as they provided a GUI based only on the options you need, not every option a remote manufacturer can put on their device. On the other hand, developers find it easier to create new interfaces for touch screen devices as they are not limited by the number of input buttons provided by the hardware. Popularity of cell phones with multi-touch capabilities are an excellent example of the rise of popularity in touch screens.

In the home automation world, owners of Omni and Lumina home automation controllers (Omni LT, Omni IIe, Omni Pro II, Lumina, and Lumina Pro) can enjoy two new touch screens from HAI; the OmniTouch 5.7e and OmniTouch 10p. Apart from allowing you to manage your home automation tasks, these devices can also be configured to control your home theater system through HAI's Home Theater Extender (HTE). The user interface and graphics can be modified in the event you don't like the default one, using HAI’s Automation Studio software. The following page shows the OmniTouch Touch Screens in action.

The OmniTouch 10p is the portable version of OmniTouch 5.7e. Its portable nature and large 10” screen make it easy for you to carry it around your house just like your normal television remote control. But that's only one of the reasons this device is powerful and fun to use. The 10p gives you the added benefit of allowing you to browse the net and check email right from the wireless tablet itself. What could be better?

Home Automation: Yet another reason to have iPhone

Around the world, a lot of people have found the iPhone as a great tool to improve the effectiveness of their daily tasks. For those who are new to iPhone, the post in "MacRumors" forum called "What do you use your iPhone for?" will show what people do with this nice little tool from Apple. Hey, but what about maintaining my home automation tasks? Can iPhone help me there as well?

To answer this question, DigitalDan has come up with an iPhone app called "H@me" which can talk to the HAI Omni or Lumina home automation controllers. If you are a proud owner of an iPhone and a supported HAI controller, then you should give H@me a try. Once downloaded, follow the instructions given in the project page to configure it with your omni/lumina home automation controller. After that, you can control lighting, thermostats, temperature sensors, audio controls and you security system.

Last month, DigitalDan announced that he would be releasing new version of H@me. This new release will come with lots of bug fixes, new features and enhancements. You can read about those changes here. However, this new version won't be freely downloadable. DigitalDan is yet to declare the price at which H@me 2.0 would be available. But till then, you can always try the existing free version of H@me.

Omnistat2 Thermostat Video User Guide

This video is a user guide on the general operation of HAI’s award winning thermostat, the Omnistat2. This product recently won "Best Green Product" at the tenth annual Electronic House Expo this past March! This expo commemorates the finest achievements in home electronics products, services, and installed technology and is attended by the majority of home automation manufacturers.

One cool new feature that HAI added to this new model thermostat is you can set the backlight display color from a set of 100 colors. The Omnistat2 can also display a graph of your heating and air conditioning usage over the past 4 weeks. This graph can help give insight on what HVAC settings work best for your house and ultimately can help save on energy bills.

The Omnistat2 has replaced all of HAI’s older model thermostats. They have simplified their climate control product line by offering only two thermostats. In situations where you’re using either a multi-stage system or you’re controlling a humidifier that’s integrated into your HVAC system, you will require the Omnistat2 RC-2000. In all other cases, the RC-1000 will suffice. HAI is also developing a wireless version of the Omnistat2 which is expected to be released later this year.

HAI & Audio Authority Team Up

Although Mile High Automation has carried both HAI and Audio Authority products for years now, the two companies finally officially teamed up together to allow for HDTV control from your HAI interfaces.

Audio Authority’s most popular product, the "AVAtrix" is a HD Cat5 Matrix system that allows you to view up to 6 HDTV devices (cable/satellite boxes, DVRs, DVD players, movie servers, etc.) on up to 37 TV’s throughout your home (base system starts at 6 TV locations).

With this new integration, it’s becoming increasingly easier to synchronize HDTV commands with other events in your various automation subsystems (security, audio, lighting, etc.). An example of this type of integration would be programming your cameras to pop up on your TV when a car comes up the driveway or when the doorbell is pressed.

We’re proud to have been offering these two great companies’ products for the past few years and we plan to continue to do so in the many years to come!

Touch Screen Video User Guide

This video user guide highlights the various features that our Omnitouch touch screen has to offer. My demonstration covers how to control the many different subsystems integrated in your HAI home automation system (lighting, security, climate control, multi-room audio, irrigation, preprogrammed macro buttons, surveillance video, and other integrated products).

One cool feature that I discovered when preparing this video was the “Clean Screen” feature which essentially freezes the screen temporarily so that you can clean it without accidentally pressing any buttons.

The Video feature was one category that I was not able to cover in detail since we do not have cameras and video hub hooked up to our automation system. You can get a better idea of what the Video feature looks like by visiting our online touch screen demo on our website at:

http://www.milehighautomation.com/demos/omnitouch/OmniTouch.htm

Also use this online demo to test your new knowledge and get a better feel for HAI’s award-winning Omnitouch touch screen!

HAI Touch Screen Graphics & Custom Interfaces

One question that pops up every now and then is about customizing the HAI Omnitouch Touch Screen graphics. HAI has designed a nice interface that is well organized and very easy to use. This interface is perfect for 95% of the population, but some people like to be able to customize the look and feel of their screens.

At this time there is no customization allowed by HAI on their touch screens. While at first this seems like a negative, it is done for good reason. When an interface is customized the system becomes near impossible to troubleshoot if problems arise. With a standard screen, it is easy to walk through steps to diagnose and fix the issue. Another great feature of the current HAI touch screen is that changes made to the Omni Pro II or Omni IIe panel are automatically updated on the touch screens. With custom screens both the system and the screen must be updated independently.

Having said that, there are a few options for the hardcore DIY-er....

Software Based Control:

While we aren't able to customize the current (notice I say current, HAI does have some future plans...) touch screens, we can use 3rd party software applications to create a custom interface that sits on top of the HAI system.

My favorite is CQC (charmedquark.com). This is software that you can load on a wireless tablet PC, or a server. You then build the interface from scratch, right down to the font and icons.

In addition to the graphical interface, CQC also allows you to build the back-end system to control the HAI system. This takes a lot more work, and in the end does not provide the same amount of control that the standard HAI does. However, you do get a slick looking screen.

The downside:

2 years ago I created a spin-off business (5280automation.com) that would create these custom interfaces. The time to design and program a single system was about 200 hours, a good month of work. In addition to time, a dedicated computer and dedicated touch panels were also required. All of this brought a single custom design with 2 touch screens to around $15,000. Not exactly in line with our product offering or clients...

After a year we scraped the project. As a business venture it did not make sense, but for a homeowner with an extra computer laying around, a lot of free time, and a vision the result can be excellent.

Closing thoughts:

As you may imagine, my home is chalked full of the equipment we sell. I spent the 200+ hours to create a working interface for my home. I ran this custom system for 2 months, then switched back to the HAI touch screens. The main reasons were speed and reliability.

If I wanted to arm the security or run a lighting scene I did not want to wait for a network connection to occur, I wanted to instantly. Since the system ran on a Windows based computer, I would sometimes wake up to a blank screen or Windows desktop after a Windows update had occurred. Not the end of the world, but I like knowing whenever I walk up to the touch screen it will be ready and waiting for me.

* All custom interfaces were created by us when 5280automation.com was up and running.
